el Caballo Marino
Karent told me the story of el Caballo Marino; often depicted having a horse’s body covered with scales and fins, this mythical creature is believed to be the protector of fishermen and a guide to the treacherous Pacific waters. Dressed in full gaucho attire, she moved gracefully among the horses, speaking to each by name and calming them as she walked. Folklore and myths endure in these wild outposts, and the people’s reverence for the sea is abundantly clear; these waters are woven into the fabric of coastal communities throughout the Patagonian archipelago, constant reminders of the dangers of the Pacific.
