Arriving at Hinewai, the sound of birdsong is immediate. As I descend the hill toward the visitor centre, two fantails dance around me, one pausing briefly on my hiking pole before guiding me to a notice board. There, a paper note secured with small stones shares the day’s weather report in Wilson’s handwriting: “Friday — Fine at first but showers are likely from mid-morning, and could be heavy and thundery, clearing late in the day.”
